Internet of things(IoT) is a system of interconnected devices with built-in wireless capability, software and sensors that can transmit data and communicate with other connected devices (Sivaraman et al. 2018). Examples of IoT is Smart Home devices such as smartphones, smart Tv's, security cameras, smart lightbulbs, fitness tracker, smart air conditioning systems, smart refrigerators and more (Sivaraman et al. 2018).> Potentially, the IoT technology embedded in these devices will reduce household living cost, assist people in reaching their health and fitness goals, improve home security and social life connectivity (Sivaraman et al. 2018). This essay endeavours to discuss the security and privacy challenges encountered in a smart home environment, the impact it has on consumers and the possible future solutions.
